ISLAMABAD, August 11, 2026 – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif issued a comprehensive message today on the occasion of National Minorities Day, reiterating the government's unwavering commitment to the protection of minority rights, interfaith harmony, and the inclusive development of all communities across Pakistan.
In his official statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that minorities are an integral part of Pakistan's national fabric, reflecting the true beauty of the country’s diverse social and cultural landscape. He paid homage to the visionary words of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, quoting his historic address to the Constituent Assembly on this very date in 1947, wherein the Founder of the Nation unequivocally affirmed the religious freedoms and equal rights of all citizens regardless of their caste, creed, or religion.
"These historic words hold an enduring place in Pakistan’s social order and governance," the Prime Minister stated, noting that the day serves as a reaffirmation of the nation's resolve for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
Highlighting recent legislative achievements, PM Sharif underscored the enactment of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 2025, as a "significant national milestone" aimed at safeguarding the rights of minority communities. According to the Prime Minister’s office, the Ministry of Human Rights is actively working to establish an independent commission under this act. The forthcoming commission will be mandated to redress grievances, oversee constitutional safeguards, recommend policy measures, and monitor employment quotas and the protection of places of worship.
Furthermore, the government introduced the Interfaith Harmony Policy 2025 to promote social cohesion, ensure religious freedom, and foster interfaith dialogue. This is accompanied by the implementation of the National Policy for Countering Violent Extremism 2024 and the newly launched National Action Plan for Human Rights 2026, which includes specific measures designed to address the needs and protection of minority communities.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the pivotal role minority communities have played in the nation's history, from the Pakistan Movement to the present day. He lauded their invaluable services across economic, educational, social, cultural, and political spheres.
The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming the collective resolve of the federal and provincial governments, civil society, and relevant institutions to continue striving for a peaceful, tolerant, and united society. He assured that every possible effort would be made to ensure equal opportunities and the constitutional protection of rights for every citizen, particularly those belonging to minority groups.
The day is being observed across the country with various events highlighting the contributions and rich cultural heritage of minority communities in Pakistan.
