A complete shutter-down strike is underway across several districts of Balochistan today in solidarity with the families of police officers killed in the Ziarat tragedy. Markets and businesses remain closed in Quetta, Pishin, Chaman, Kuchlak, Sibi and Zhob, emptying streets that are normally bustling with commercial activity.
The strike was called by the Central Traders Association of Balochistan in support of the protest schedule announced by the All Parties and Mangi Martyrs' Sit-in Committee. Traders' leaders had urged all district units and market associations across the province to fully honor the shutdown.
Families of the officers killed in the tragedy, which occurred in the Mangi area of Ziarat, have been staging a sit-in in Quetta for several days. Talks between a government negotiating committee and the protesters have so far ended without a breakthrough, with the bereaved families demanding the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the incident.
The strike has disrupted traffic flow and daily commercial life in the affected cities, and the situation remains tense as both sides await further developments.
This is a developing story. The Balochistan Dispatch will update this report as more details emerge.
