Journalist Nazar Ali Kanrani was killed on Tuesday after unidentified armed attackers opened fire on him, according to details shared with The Balochistan Dispatch, the latest in a string of killings that has renewed concern over the safety of journalists working in Balochistan.

His death came as the mother and widow of another slain journalist, Lala Israfil, held a joint press conference ; demanding justice, more than forty days after his killing. His mother said the killers had still not been arrested and appealed to the Army Chief and the Balochistan Chief Minister to take notice of the case and ensure those responsible are apprehended and given severe punishment.

According to the Balochistan Union of Journalists, 42 (now 44) journalists have been killed in the province since 2008, and there have been no convictions in any of these cases.Quetta and Khuzdar, according to the same data, has recorded the first and second-highest number of journalist killings in the province 23 since 2006, including three presidents of its press club, after which the club was shut for four years.

The Balochistan Dispatch has not independently verified the circumstances of Nazar Ali Kanrani's killing is seeking comment from police and local authorities.
