DERA BUGTI: A wave of unregulated digging has gripped the Singhsilla area of Dera Bugti district, where local residents, spurred by rumors of hidden gold and treasure, are unearthing what archaeologists believe to be artifacts of immense historical significance. The situation, documented in photographic evidence, has sparked alarm among heritage experts warning of an impending cultural catastrophe.
The photographs, taken by residents on-site, reveal a chaotic scene of amateur excavation. A hand-modeled terracotta figurine, featuring distinctive large eyes and style indicative of a prehistoric or early historic civilization, is seen clutched in a digger's hand. Another image shows a collection of ancient earthen pots—some broken, some intact—scattered across the dug-up land. These items, likely dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization or a regional Bronze Age culture, represent a buried chapter of Balochistan's ancient past.
According to local accounts, participants in the digging believe the artifacts contain precious metals. However, the items are unglazed clay artifacts, devoid of gold but rich in historical value. The use of picks and shovels by untrained individuals is causing irreversible damage, including the destruction of stratigraphic context—the precise soil layers that archaeologists rely upon for dating and interpretation.
Heritage experts have urgently called upon the Balochistan Department of Culture, Tourism, and Archives and the Directorate General of Archaeology & Museums to intervene. Immediate steps include halting the digging, securing the site, and conducting a professional archaeological survey. Public awareness campaigns are also critical to educate the community about the irreplaceable value of their heritage.
"This is a tragedy in the making," said a cultural heritage specialist familiar with the region. "These artifacts are not treasure; they are our collective memory. Once destroyed, their history is lost forever."
