The Balochistan government has said that a threat- and security-related notification circulating on social media is fake and baseless, and has appealed to the public not to give any weight to unverified or fabricated information.

In a statement, Adviser to the Home Department Babar Yousafzai said protecting the lives and property of the public was the government's foremost priority, and that all law-enforcement and security agencies were fully alert. The safety of people and the maintenance of law and order, he said, would be ensured under all circumstances.

Yousafzai warned that strict action would be taken under the law against those spreading fake notifications and rumours on social media. He said the provincial government had cautioned repeatedly that false information and misleading propaganda were intolerable, and that anyone involved in fabricated publicity, rumour-mongering or spreading fear among the public would not escape the law.

The adviser urged residents to trust only information issued through official and authentic sources, adding that all relevant departments were carrying out their responsibilities in full coordination to maintain peace and protect the public.

The statement did not describe the contents of the notification in question or say where it had originated. It comes against the backdrop of a tense security environment in Balochistan, where officials have previously flagged the use of social media to spread propaganda and unverified claims.
