Army Officer Detained After Opening Fire at University During Student Protest

Published August 24, 2026

ISLAMABAD – A military officer was detained on Monday after allegedly firing shots at a student protest at the Sarhad University campus in Islamabad, officials confirmed.

What Happened?

Students were protesting against the university’s HR manager—a woman—over her alleged inappropriate behavior and false case filing against Dr. Jadoon Khan, the head of their department. The students carried banners reading "Justice for Sir," and accused the HR manager of pushing Dr. Khan and threatening him with legal action.

Tensions escalated when the HR manager called her husband, a serving army officer, to the scene.

The Shooting

According to student accounts, the officer arrived in uniform and hit a student with a baton, which angered the crowd. The officer then fired shots into the air to disperse the protesters.

Videos circulating on social media show the officer firing his pistol in the air.

Response from Army and Police

Senior journalist Hamid Mir reported that the military took immediate notice of the incident and detained the officer, initiating disciplinary proceedings against him. A military official stated that the armed forces' system of discipline and accountability is based on principles of justice and impartiality, and strict action will be taken against those responsible after the investigation.

Islamabad police reached the scene and assured students of action. A police official identified the officer as holding the rank of Brigadier.

Student Demands

The students demanded a transparent investigation and action against the HR manager and the officer. The university administration has not yet issued an official statement.

No casualties have been reported. Investigations are ongoing.
