Ten years ago almost nobody in Karachi could point to Kund Malir on a map. Then the photographs started circulating, a ribbon of golden desert dunes running straight into a turquoise sea, mountains standing dry and silent behind, and a beach in Balochistan quietly became one of the most talked-about destinations in Pakistan. Travel lists now routinely rank it among the most beautiful beaches in Asia.
The best part: it is a straightforward day trip from Karachi, on one of the best roads in the country. Here is everything you need to know, from the people whose province it is.
Where is Kund Malir and how do you get there?
Kund Malir sits on the Makran Coastal Highway (N-10) in district Lasbela, inside the boundary of Hingol National Park, roughly a four-hour drive from Karachi [VERIFY exact distance; commonly cited figures range from 175 to 240 km depending on starting point]. The route is simple and entirely paved:
Karachi → Hub → Uthal → Zero Point → Aghor → Kund Malir.
Zero Point is your lifeline: the junction where the coastal highway begins is the last reliable fuel and proper food. Fill the tank, buy water, use the facilities. After this, services are minimal.
Any car works. The highway is smooth tarmac the whole way, this is not a 4x4 trip unless you plan to explore Hingol's interior tracks.
Leave at dawn. You beat Karachi's traffic, cross Buzi Pass in good light, and get the beach before the day heats up.
Carry your CNIC, there are checkpoints along the highway and registration is routine.
What it costs: huts, resorts and camping
Kund Malir has grown from a fishing hamlet with a few shacks into a small strip of beach tourism, still basic, but far more comfortable than five years ago. Current options :
Budget beach huts: around Rs. 1,000-1,500 for simple shaded huts along the sand, fine for a day visit's base.
Resorts: newer places such as Baloch Beach Resort and Gold Coast offer rooms and serviced camping in the Rs. 15,000-20,000 range, with food service, water, parking and even mobile internet.
Your own tent: camping on the beach remains the classic Kund Malir experience, bring all your gear and supplies. The night sky here, with no city within a hundred kilometres, is astonishing.
Facilities: basic paid toilets (around Rs. 30), simple hut restaurants serving fish, dal and paratha. Do not expect more, that is part of the charm.
Weekends fill up. If you want a hut or resort room on a Friday, Sunday, book by phone in advance.
When to go
October to March is the season: warm days, cool nights, calm mornings. Summer (April, September) brings hard heat and stronger seas, locals still go, but start at dawn and take shade seriously. Avoid the sea during rough swell; there are no lifeguards, and currents along this coast deserve respect. Wade and swim close to shore, never alone.
What to do at Kund Malir
The dunes at first light, walk the golden ridge behind the beach at sunrise; this is the photograph that made Kund Malir famous.
Swim the morning sea, calmest before noon.
Eat fish at the huts, caught the same morning by Aghor's fishermen.
Continue to the Princess of Hope, the iconic Hingol rock formations are only about 40 minutes further along the highway. See our full Hingol National Park guide.
Stay for the stars, if you camp, the Milky Way over the Arabian Sea is the finest free show in Pakistan.
The mistakes first-timers make
Not fueling at Zero Point, running low past Aghor means a long, hot problem.
Underestimating water, carry at least 3 litres per person for a day trip.
Arriving at noon, the light is flat, the sand burns, and you have missed the best of the day.
Leaving litter, there is no waste collection. Whatever you bring, take back. The beach is beautiful because people before you did.
Expecting mobile signal, coverage is patchy to absent for long stretches. Download offline maps and tell someone your plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can families visit Kund Malir?
Yes, it is one of the most family-visited spots in Balochistan, especially in winter weekends. The environment is conservative; dress modestly, especially for swimming.
Is there an entry fee?
The beach itself is free; Hingol National Park entry applies on park attractions along the highway
Kund Malir or Gadani, which beach?
